Everyone knows one thing: in life, we have to follow our dreams. However if you really contemplate this advice, you’ll begin to ask yourself one important follow-up question: what if I don’t know what the hell my dream is? But the truth is we know. At least a little bit. We might not allow ourselves to hear it though. See, before you can follow your dream you have to understand this: other people are not going to understand your dream. You will encounter people all the time that will question you, doubting the practicality of your dream or telling you that you wont make enough money pursuing you dream. Despite what they believe, they do not possess the ability to understand your dream so their opinions are unjustified and irrelevant.
Another thing about dreams is the timeline in which they are reached. Society has somehow ingrained in our minds that you should be doing certain things by certain ages. Try all you will but you won’t be able to plan it out. The reason for this is that things will happen that will set you off your course. Maybe something happens that makes you change your views and alter your dream. Maybe something happens that pulls you away from working toward your dream. Either way, it’s okay if your not on the same schedule as everyone else and its okay if you change your mind. Things will happen that won’t make sense at the time but later on you’ll realize that they led you to progress. According to Steve Jobs, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” The dots might not make a direct, straight path but that’s boring anyway, the ups and downs make for a much more interesting picture in the end. Think about your dream or even just a tiny step that you know will lead you to your dream, even if it seems really tiny, or even if it seems like a backwards step.
The phrase “follow your dreams” often gets surpassed. Words are so important and often times they get thrown around nonchalantly by those who don’t realize their complete entirety. I challenge you to think about this. Really think. Don’t think of it as me telling you this advice or you hearing it from someone else’s cliche Instagram selfie caption or even you hearing from a person you admire. I want you to think about what it means to you. So, think. And think without limits.
When you think about this and you begin to understand what it means to you, you’ll have an easier time not allowing poisonous people to interrupt your progress. I’m not saying it is going to be easy though. As much I would love to be able to disregard everyone else’s opinions, I can’t. It still amazes me the audacity people have that allows them to judge another person without even knowing them. Because it is usually those people, the people that really don’t know you at all.
In the meantime, good luck with where you are right now, wherever it is, realize it has a purpose. Happy Tuesday.
